Calligraphy
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing, hand-written script with individual variations and embellishments.
The term "calligraphy" originates from Ancient Greek: "kalós" means beauty and "graph" means writing.
Calligraphy has been practised in various forms since ancient times. From the earliest examples on Greek and Roman tablets to the ornate manuscripts of Medieval times, calligraphy hasn't simply been regarded an artistic skill, but also served as the main source of written communication and expression until the invention of the printing press.
Throughout Europe, there are various historical works by ancient and medieval calligraphers - often originating in monasteries - which are impressive by virtue of their lavish design and wealth of intricate detail.
For many writers of calligraphy, the attainment of a perfect aesthetic balance and the visualisation of emotions is more important than legibility. Script is seen as a language, the bearer of thoughts and ideas. Many calligraphy artists refer to the almost meditative nature of their work.
Even if calligraphy has lost much of its prestige in Europe since the start of modern times, it is still very much alive as an art form and hobby pursuit.
Today, you may well see calligraphy in documents, posters or entries in albums. Beautiful writing is also ideal for all manner of decorations such as individual greetings cards or Christmas decorations, creating impressive results! Calligraphy used on everyday items can add a touch of poetry to our lives. By writing a favourite poem, personal inscription, baptismal or wedding motto in a wholly individual, calligraphy style, you can conjure up cards, pictures or objects with so much more expression.
